Abstract

Facial malformations are a group of congenital anomalies that occur during facial development, with cleft lip and palate being among the most common craniofacial malformations in humans. Thus, this study aimed to characterize patients undergoing cleft lip and palate surgeries, according to the type of cleft and age at surgery, in a pediatric hospital in the state of Ceará. A quantitative approach was adopted, through the collection of data from the medical records of the Albert Sabin Children's Hospital (HIAS) during the period from April 2010 to January 2024. A total of 1671 medical records were evaluated, which underwent cleft lip and palate surgeries, totaling 2036 procedures. Most of the patients were male, living in the interior of the state and having a transforamen cleft. The most common surgery performed was primary lip/nose surgery, with patients undergoing this procedure at an average age of 3.25 years. The epidemiological profile of patients undergoing cleft lip and palate surgery at HIAS is similar to that reported in the literature, compared to other hospitals with the same service, but differs in terms of the average age of surgical procedures. These data show the need for public policies aimed at reducing the average age of surgery.
