Abstract

Benzodiazepines correspond to a class of psychotropic drugs that produce hypnotic, sedative, anticonvulsant, anxiolytic and muscle relaxant effects, with good efficacy in short-term treatments for mental disorders. Prolonged use can cause important adverse effects, including tolerance and dependence. In the elderly, long-term consumption can cause serious damage to health and well-being. The objective of this work is to analyze the main negative consequences for the health and quality of life of elderly people as a result of prolonged use of benzodiazepines. Regarding methodological aspects, this is a qualitative study, carried out through an integrative literature review, with searches in databases available on the internet. Only studies published between 2019 and 2023, in Portuguese, English or Spanish, with a study objective focused on the use of benzodiazepines by elderly people and containing at least one of the descriptors in the title or abstract, were included. Incomplete texts and course completion works were excluded. Only 13 studies met the eligibility criteria and addressed the prevalence of consumption in the elderly population, main adverse effects and consequences related to prolonged use of benzodiazepines. The effectiveness of these drugs is well documented, but prescription is inappropriate for elderly people and the literature analyzed indicates consensus on serious long-term consequences, such as cognitive deficit, imbalance, insomnia, weakness, tolerance, dependence and risk of abuse, postural instability, high risk of falls and fractures, in addition to serious drug interactions. In conclusion, the use of benzodiazepines for a prolonged period of time has serious consequences for the health and quality of life of the elderly, demonstrating the need for strict care when prescribing and providing guidance on the use of these medications.
