Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease characterized by high blood glucose levels, caused by insulin deficiency or resistance. The treatment of DM aims at glycemic control, with the use of insulin or medications, however, these pharmacological methods do not prevent the development of complications associated with the disease. Mesenchymal stem cells (mesenchymal CT) represent a promising alternative in the treatment of DM. The present study aimed to synthesize knowledge about the use of mesenchymal stem cells in the treatment of diabetes mellitus. To this end, an integrative review of the scientific literature was carried out, looking for articles published between the years 2019 and 2024, in the PubMed, SciELO and LILACS databases, through the combinations of the descriptors: Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Diabetes Mellitus and Treatment. The literature search resulted in a total of 3,381 articles, of which, after the application of the established methodological criteria, 10 articles were included in the study. Mesenchymal stem cells are multipotent cells, which can be isolated from the bone marrow, placenta, umbilical cord and other tissues. Studies show that these cells promote the regeneration of pancreatic β cells, fighting oxidative stress and stimulating angiogenesis, in addition, they have an immunosuppressive effect, modulating the inflammatory process and improving the function of the immune system, which triggers glycemic control and the prevention of chronic complications associated with DM. Although promising, the mesenchymal CTs present challenges, such as the need for a greater understanding of their stability, migratory capacity and risk of unwanted differentiation. In summary, despite presenting characteristics that need to be further studied and clarified, mesenchymal CTs represent a viable and innovative alternative for the treatment of DM.
