Abstract

Emotional labor is an important nursing care strategy aimed at providing comprehensive, affectionate, and individualized assistance to children with cancer. The objective of this study is to analyze scientific evidence regarding the practice of emotional labor in nursing within the context of pediatric oncology. This is an Integrative Literature Review guided by the question: what scientific evidence exists about the practice of emotional labor in nursing within pediatric oncology for humanizing care? The search for studies was conducted from August to October 2022, using the Lilacs, Medline, Virtual Health Library, and CAPES Portal databases. The inclusion criteria were articles published between 2017 and 2022, in English and Portuguese, and studies available in full text in online journals. A total of 1,471 publications were identified, of which 7 made up the sample. Among these, 57.2% were of national origin and 48.8% were international. It was found that, among the strategies used by nurses to promote emotional labor in nursing, most utilized playfulness. The studies confirmed the importance of creating a playful and more welcoming environment, the use of toys and therapeutic play, sandplay techniques, active video games, and interactive drawing as playful interventions essential for coping with the illness. Despite this, emotional care is still underdeveloped in nursing care, especially when focused on children with cancer. It is important to consider the emotional and affective dimensions in nursing care for children with cancer, as this extends beyond the physical scope, involving caring that is full of love for others and compassion in the face of suffering.
