Abstract

In organic farming, the lack of access to technology and investment resources leads producers to look for ways to perpetuate and store viable plant material, such as creole seeds. Cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata) are a valued crop in these systems and are widely cultivated. However, the transfer of creole varieties of this legume can be unfavorable in some cases due to the variable quality of the seeds, which requires evaluation. Rapid germination tests may be a more economical alternative for determining the vigor of these seeds. The aim of this study was to evaluate the vigor of creole cowpea seeds using rapid tests. The work was carried out at the Multidisciplinary Biochemistry Laboratory of Faculdades Nova Esperança, in João Pessoa - PB. Three batches of cowpeas were analyzed for their morphological characteristics. A rapid test was carried out with iodine-based dye, a fast green test, immersion in sodium hypochlorite, and an assessment of seedling vigor. From the rapid tests, it was possible to detect the mechanical damage present in the seeds. The results of the tests show differences between them in terms of mechanical damage and seedling emergence. The seeds had linear averages for length, width, and thickness. There was no significant difference between the batches. It was possible to observe that damage influenced seedling vigor between the batches. Batch 2 had the highest number of healthy seeds and the highest seedling vigor. It can, therefore, be concluded that rapid tests efficiently assess cowpea seeds' vigo
